Stoner comedies contain goofy adventures, relatable characters, and unforgettable movie weed quotes. They define the culture as much as bongs, seven-fingered leaf apparel, Snoop Dogg, and LSD seeds. Citing them signals your love of marijuana and makes everybody in hearing range crack up.

Here are nine incredible movies about stoners and our favorite quotable line of each.

Friday (1995)

Friday is set in Los Angeles and follows Ice Cube’s perpetually unemployed protagonist Craig. His best friend Smokey, played by Chris Tucker, is an avid weed smoker. Their shared misadventures revolve around marijuana, gang violence, and companionship.

Craig tries to nag his buddy about toking, and Smokey shares a profound argument for cannabis:

‘Man, ain’t nothing wrong with smoking weed. Weed is from the earth. God put this here for me and you. Take advantage, man. Take advantage.’

Up In Smoke (1978)

Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke is the duo’s first feature-length film and the quintessential buddy stoner comedy. Chong’s amateur drummer Anthony Stoner hits the road and meets a kindred spirit in the form of Cheech’s Pedro de Pacas. The two proceed to enjoy a weed-driven escapade. They also deliver some strain suggestions:

Pedro: I been smoking since I was born, man, I can smoke anything, man. You know like I smoke that Michoacán, and Acapulco Gold, man. I even smoke that tied stick, you know?

Anthony: “Tied stick”?

Pedro: Yeah, you know that stuff that’s tied to a stick.

Man Stoner: Ohh, THAI stick.

Pineapple Express (2008)

Pineapple Express is a cult classic about Seth Rogen’s Dale and James Franco’s Saul escaping a murderous drug lord. It’s a comedic masterpiece packed with tension and stoner culture references.

The film opens with a beautiful description of being high. This sentence is easily among the best stoner movie quotes ever uttered on the big screen:

‘Ah, well, sir, I feel like a, like a slice o’ butter…meltin’ on top of a big ol’ pile of flapjacks.’

Knocked Up (2007)

Knocked Up isn’t a traditional stoner comedy, but it does feature Seth Rogen. He plays Ben, a laid-back weed smoker who has a one-night-stand with Katherine Heigl’s Alison. She becomes pregnant, and the two must figure out how to make their stark differences work and raise a kid.

Besides the romance and young adult themes, this film has a fantastic endorsement of marijuana. Ben says the following:

‘It is, like, the best medicine. Because it fixes everything. Jonah broke his elbow once. He just got high, and it still clicks, but I mean… he’s okay.’

Half Baked (1998)

Half Baked stars Dave Chapelle in a gritty, urban 420 adventure. It’s about three slacker friends who must raise bail for their friend, so they decide to sell stolen weed. While doing so, they meet shady characters and display incredible resourcefulness.

Apart from quintessential stoner culture moments, this title has several explicitly pro-pot political movie weed quotes:

‘Marijuana is not a drug. I used to suck d**k for coke. Now that’s an addiction. You ever suck some d**k for marijuana?’

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle is a buddy stoner comedy. Kal Penn and John Cho have a severe case of munchies which only the delicious burgers from White Castle can satisfy. Their journey is offset by surreal obstacles and even Neil Patrick Harris.

The movie’s packed with memorable bits of dialogue, like:

Harold: Dude, we’re so high right now!

Kumar: We’re not low!

Grandma’s Boy (2006)

Allen Covert’s video game creator Alex finds himself homeless in Grandma’s Boy. He moves in with his wacky grandma Lilly, played by Doris Roberts. A major intergenerational party breaks out as the plot progresses.

Alex’s friend and dealer Dante is a prominent character in this film. Here’s what he said about a cultivar they smoke:

Dante: ‘This one’s called the Brown Bomber. Because when you smoke it, you get so stoned you s**t your pants!’

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Dazed and Confused is a coming-of-age story about a group of teens in the late ’70s. Nobody loves smoking weed like Matthew McConaughey’s Wooderson. Although minor, this character captures the essence of being a carefree stoner of the era.

Wooderson asks Kramer whether he has a joint and gets a negative response. What follows is a one-liner to reach the hearts of every thwarted toker.

‘It’d be a lot cooler if you did.’

The Big Lebowski (1998)

The Big Lebowski stars Jeff Bridges as ‘The Dude.’ He’s a Los Angeles-based slacker mistaken for the millionaire of the same name. Thugs try to coerce him into repaying a debt; the plot soon escalates to an intrigue-packed mission.

The Dude delivers side-splitting one-liners in a calm tone. Our favorite is:

‘Fortunately, I’m adhering to a pretty strict drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.’

Puff, Quote, Pass
