Just like Sisi’s fiery spirit, the show captured many hearts when it first aired in 2022. The German-language drama is making a comeback with its second season, promising more palace drama, splendid outfits, and romantic moments.
“I’m incredibly grateful that we were able to touch so many different people in Germany and all over the world with our series,” said showrunner Katharina Eyssen when Netflix announced the renewal. “The story of Elisabeth’s life is a story of the power of love, but also of the courage to be different and of hope for a better future. And that’s what we need at this time. And that’s why we’re very happy to be able to continue telling this exciting story.”

What is The Empress about?
The Empress follows Bavarian princess Elisabeth, or Sisi, who becomes the Austrian empress. She struggles with the strict life of the Habsburg court in the 1800s after marrying Emperor Franz Joseph. Despite the challenges, she becomes beloved as she fights for her freedom and individuality.
What happens in The Empress Season 1?
Sisi rebels against the rigid rules of the Habsburg court. When her stern mother-in-law, Sophia, tells her to return to Bavaria and consider ending her marriage, she agrees. She even hides her pregnancy from her husband. As she leaves the palace, she encounters an angry crowd. Instead of hiding, she steps out and announces her pregnancy to them. Then, the screen goes black, leaving everyone with a million questions: How does the crowd react? Will Sisi leave Franz? Does she want to?

What will happen in The Empress Season 2?
The new season picks up right after the young couple’s first big crisis. They hope to enjoy their new marriage, but trouble is brewing at Schönbrunn Palace. Franz faces a strong enemy in Europe, and Elisabeth feels pressured to produce an heir quickly. As fate challenges them, their love is at risk of falling apart. Elisabeth has to fight for her family and her inner peace.
