Jentry Chau, a 16-year-old, isn’t just dealing with high school drama—she’s battling underworld monsters.
In the animated series Jentry Chau vs the Underworld, created by Echo Wu, a Chinese-American girl finds her life flipped upside down when a demon king wants to steal her powers. But it’s not all about fighting demons; Jentry also faces regular teenage stuff like crushes, adults who think they know everything, and trying to stay cool among friends. Even though it’s filled with supernatural fun, the show talks about real-life challenges that everyone can understand.
Echo Wu shared with Tudum, “Sometimes finding your self-identity is coming face-to-face with your own demons.” This idea was super important while they made the show. Jentry’s journey is all about figuring out if her powers are a blessing or a curse. She’s on a quest to discover who she really is.
The animation tries hard to make everything look just like our world, minus the creepy creatures. Wu said, “I wanted this show to feel super grounded,” emphasizing how refreshing it is when animation mirrors reality instead of imaginary lands.
Wu also wanted to show how a teen might react to having superpowers. She thought a teen would probably hide them, worrying it would be social suicide in a world where fitting in is everything. Fans can totally relate to this kind of dilemma.
The show feels like those old-school cartoons but speaks to both kids and grown-ups. We’re excited to meet the new hero, Jentry Chau.
