Get ready to see Sofía Vergara like never before in Griselda.
In this gripping drama series, Vergara plays the formidable Griselda Blanco and also takes on the role of executive producer. Streaming now, she has even earned an Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Limited Series.
With six intense hour-long episodes, Griselda is crafted by Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz, the masterminds behind Narcos and Narcos: Mexico. They join forces with Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda, and Carlo Bernard as co-creators and executive producers, making this series a powerhouse collaboration.
“From my early research days for Narcos, [Griselda] stood out as a fascinating character,” Newman shares with Tudum. “I’ve always aimed to humanize complex individuals, and Griselda was both a challenge and an opportunity.”
Who was Griselda Blanco?
This show takes inspiration from Griselda Blanco, a shrewd Colombian businesswoman who became a notorious figure in the underworld.
Griselda portrays her journey as a devoted mother who built one of history’s most lucrative cartels, blending charm and savagery to navigate both family life and the criminal world.
“No woman has ever reached the level of power, wealth, and fear that Griselda did,” Newman says. “Griselda is a unique rise-and-fall story. It’s thrilling, emotional, funny, scary, and tragic. She’s an antihero filled with contradictions.”
Fans can’t help but be intrigued by such a compelling character.
Despite Griselda being unlike anyone Vergara has played before, Newman wasn’t surprised by her performance. “She’s unstoppable, and whatever she aims for, she achieves,” he explains. “She was perfect for the role –– not just because she shares a background with Griselda but because it was unexpected for her.”
Where can I watch the Griselda trailer?
Check it out above! Watch as Vergara transforms into the ruthless La Jefa, bringing ’70s and ’80s Miami to life during its intense drug wars.
Baiz shares, “Miami in the ’70s and ’80s allowed us to have fun with world-building. The music, architecture, wardrobe, and set designs inspired a unique tone—surreal, joyful, sexy, yet transgressive.”

How did they make Sofía Vergara look like Griselda?
Vergara’s makeover into Griselda is astonishing, thanks to her dedicated hair and makeup team. In the “Becoming Griselda” video, Baiz mentions how they aimed for a transformation rather than imitation.
Newman agrees: “She spent hours daily in makeup! She wore five different wigs, prosthetic eyebrows, a prosthetic nose, and fake teeth to match Griselda’s look. By the time she left her makeup trailer, she was Griselda, not Sofía.”
How is Griselda related to Narcos?
The creative team makes the connection. As noted earlier, Griselda is co-created by Narcos veterans Newman and Baiz, who directs all six episodes. Their experience on Narcos helped them create a seamless rhythm for this new project.
Newman views Griselda as an “evolutionary descendant” of Narcos. With their established teamwork, they could focus on Vergara taking unprecedented risks in her role. Both shows are bilingual, featuring Latin American actors switching between Spanish and English.
Although Griselda might not be as famous as Pablo Escobar, “even he was scared of her,” says Vergara. As an executive producer, she believed in the Narcos team’s ability to find humanity in complex stories. “They understand this world and its history, and audiences trust their vision,” she said.
Griselda also highlights the struggles of both Griselda and Miami Police officer June Hawkins (Juliana Aidén Martinez) in male-dominated environments. Newman sees parallels between law enforcement and drug trafficking, as both worlds blur the lines between good and bad.
Has Griselda been nominated for any Emmy Awards?
