The Opening Scene Experience
Jenna Lamia, the show’s creator, hopes you’ll have those snacks when tuning in on September 5 to dive into the murder mystery. “That’s what I always pictured for some reason,” she shares. “If we’re not giving Olivia Pope, we haven’t done our job.”
A Nantucket Summer
The Perfect Couple, inspired by Elin Hilderbrand’s bestseller, brings the essence of a Nantucket summer to life in its first seven minutes. “I’ve always been meticulous about creating an accurate world, but also ensuring the characters are specific because generic never works,” says Susanne Bier, the director and executive producer. “You need to understand the world.”
Nailing Nantucket
Lamia knew that Nantucket would be more than just a setting—it’s a character. “When I first talked to Elin, we connected over the importance of getting Nantucket right,” she says. “We had to nail the details: the hydrangeas, the red pants, the worn boat shoes. It’s wealth that looks effortless.”
Fans can’t wait to see how they captured the vibe.
The Winbury Wedding
The show revolves around the wedding of Benji Winbury and Amelia Sacks. Hosted by Benji’s mom, Greer Garrison Winbury, the #WinburyWedding is set for an unforgettable Fourth of July weekend.
In the opening scene, which you can watch above, a camera crew follows the high society guests at the rehearsal dinner. We meet maid of honor Merritt Monaco, best man Shooter Dival, and other members of the Winbury family, including father Tag, older brother Thomas and his pregnant wife Abby, younger brother Will, and family friend Isabel Nallet.
The Mystery Unfolds
But by the next morning, the celebration turns dark. The Nantucket police receive a call about a dead body on the Winbury property. As police chief Dan Carter puts it, “No one’s getting married today.”
The Anticipation
Lamia hopes viewers will watch The Perfect Couple with “bated breath and needing to keep going because they can’t stand not knowing who did it yet,” she says. “But I hope they’ll also laugh!”
