The call is coming from inside the house! That’s what Debora Cahn, creator of The Diplomat, wants fans to understand as Season 2 approaches.
“Season 1 ended with Kate discovering the attack on a British warship was actually orchestrated by the British prime minister,” she reveals. “Now she has to prove it.”
“The US and the UK share all their intelligence, so how do you investigate the PM? Who can you trust?”
Kate also faces the aftermath of a bomb explosion that hit her colleagues and almost-ex-husband in the Season 1 finale. “Her marriage, her new relationship – everything’s in shambles.”
Everything you need to know about The Diplomat Season 2 before its premiere on October 31 is below.
What’s The Diplomat Season 2 about?
Still recovering from the explosive ending of Season 1? Don’t worry, Season 2 will unravel the mysteries from that shocking finale. Cahn says, “Everything we thought we knew about the Wylers changes, as does everything they think they know about each other.”
Adding to the drama, the US vice president Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, joins the cast. “The VP thinks Kate’s gunning for her job,” says Cahn. “She’s not entirely wrong. But Kate misunderstands the VP, too.”
Executive producer and star Keri Russell, who got an Emmy nomination for her role as Kate Wyler, shares, “I am thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show. Dare I say it’s fun?”
Fans can’t wait to see where this season will take us.
How did The Diplomat Season 1 end?
Cahn, who has worked on The West Wing and Homeland, knows how to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. “We had such a great time making The Diplomat. And it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying it,” she says. “We’re so glad we get to do it again.”
In the last minutes of Season 1, Kate learns that British prime minister Nicol Trowbridge was behind the explosion of the British aircraft carrier. The finale ends with another explosion, leaving the fate of Hal, Stuart Hayford, office clerk Ronnie, and MP Merritt Grove uncertain.
“I wanted it to make people want more,” says Cahn. Sewell adds, “If you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons].”
The Diplomat premiered on April 20 and topped Netflix’s global Top 10 TV list in its first weekend. “Fans around the world are loving every minute of The Diplomat’s gripping drama and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler,” says Netflix VP Jinny Howe. “After that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, we can’t wait for them to see what Debora Cahn, Janice Williams, and Keri Russell have in store for Season 2.” Alex Graves also joins as executive producer alongside Cahn, Williams, and Russell.

Allison Janney joins the cast as Vice President Grace Penn. Janney will guest star throughout the season.
